Geoshine™ Glows in Architect Director’s Home
A Geoshine™ polished concrete floor is a central design feature in boutique Melbourne architect Mark Butler’s home.
Having just finished a celebrity stint on the hit reality renovation TV series The Block, Geocrete’s Paul Warner was in high demand as a world-class specialist in polished concrete. Aware of Paul’s impressive portfolio, it was only natural that Mark ask Paul to collaborate with him on the construction of his own home in the bayside suburb of Black Rock.
Designed by Mark, the house has an arresting façade that juxtaposes different colours and textured materials, including concrete, reinforced mesh, horizontal timber slats and metal cladding. Inside, the luxuriously expansive and brilliantly white polished concrete floor provides a spectacular contrast to the timber highlights, and looks wonderful paired with the marble kitchen, double height ceilings, matt black feature cabinetry and exposed black steel frames.
The floor features a meticulously executed full-stone exposure of Creswick white quartz in off-white cement. The lovely natural light that engulfs the house accentuates the floor’s luminous shine and vivid white colour.
Mark, who established his bayside architectural studio Elevation 7 in 2002, had previously used polished concrete in his clients’ homes, and it is a testament to the product that he used it in his own home. “Living with kids and pets so close to the beach, Mark chose polished concrete for its hard-wearing attributes and amazing ability to withstand the abrasiveness of sand,” Paul said.
For Paul, it was a difficult job that called for a great degree of attention to detail, having to negotiate the timber work and a very tight laundry space, but it was also a highly rewarding one. “It was fantastic to work for someone with such a high profile in the industry. Mark absolutely loves his polished concrete floor, and the job has only strengthened our relationship.”
The builder, Ben Dowling of Dowling Builders, has also worked with Paul on a number of other projects. He gave Paul a glowing testimonial, complimenting his professionalism and skill.
