Geocrete partnership creates Clifton Hill glamour
A partnership between luxury polished concrete specialist Geocrete and concrete supplier HY-TEC has produced a dramatic and unusual floor in the Bohemian inner Melbourne suburb of Clifton Hill.
One of the first of many projects between the two companies, the Geoshine™ floor is a standout feature of the heritage listed home, enviably positioned opposite the beautiful Edinburgh Gardens.
In keeping with the suburb’s characteristic period architecture, the home retains its original federation facade, while hiding an ultra-modern rear extension with a soaring double height ceiling that delivers an abundance of light to the house.
Originally from Perth, the owners have brought their chic-retro style to the space, with sumptuous duck-blue sofas that complement the living room’s quirky wooden feature cabinetry. The blues and timber tones are echoed in the outdoor entertaining area, bringing the outdoors in and contributing to a liberal feeling of space.
Polished concrete was the obvious choice of floor, adding a dramatic and glamorous highlight to the home. The owners chose a highly-glossed Geoshine™ floor with a stunning aggregate of quartzite, granite and basalt. With sparkling whites, blues, browns, greys and blacks, the stones are an eye-catching assortment of colours and shapes set off by the off-white concrete base.
Geocrete’s Paul Warner polished the concrete to a beautiful full stone exposure, which the owners chose for its similarity in style to the terrazzo tiles in the foyer.
According to Paul, the small quantity of unusually large basalt pebbles is a unique feature of the floor. “Aggregate is normally 14mm in size, but this floor features a 5% mix of basalt that is 20mm in size. These uncommonly large basalt gradings add a wonderfully theatrical element to the floor, which looks spectacular in the neutral off-white base.
“Polished concrete is an amazing product that is fully customisable, and encompasses limitless possibilities for a truly unique floor. I love helping clients explore the options and then tailoring the process through different grinding and polishing levels to produce an exceptional outcome.” If you’re considering using polished concrete in a build, get in touch with Paul to discuss the possibilities.
